Grey Matter Neurosciences Appoints Focused Ultrasound Pioneer, Dr. Kullervo Hynynen, to Scientific Advisory Board

TORONTO, ON — May 21, 2026 — Grey Matter Neurosciences, a neurotechnology company developing non-invasive focused ultrasound systems to treat brain disorders, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kullervo Hynynen, to its Scientific Advisory Board.

Dr. Hynynen is internationally recognized as a pioneer in focused ultrasound for brain and other applications and currently serves as a Senior Scientist and past Vice President, Research and Innovation at Sunnybrook Research Institute as well as Professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Hynynen is the lead inventor of Grey Matter’s platform technology, which underpins the company’s novel approach to non-invasive brain stimulation. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has led groundbreaking research in therapeutic ultrasound and neuromodulation, including foundational work in MR-guided focused ultrasound and non-invasive targeting of deep brain structures.

With more than 500 peer-reviewed publications and numerous patents, Dr. Hynynen’s work has been instrumental in advancing the global clinical translation of therapeutic ultrasound technologies and establishing focused ultrasound as a transformative modality in brain therapy.

“Dr. Hynynen’s world-leading contributions to focused ultrasound and his role as the lead inventor of our platform technology make him uniquely positioned to guide our scientific direction,” said Dr. Jeffrey Coull, Grey Matter’s Founder and CEO. “We are thrilled to formally welcome him to our Scientific Advisory Board as we rapidly advance our technology toward clinical impact.”

“I am excited to join Grey Matter’s Scientific Advisory Board at this important stage,” added Dr. Hynynen. “The company’s approach to non-invasive, precise neuromodulation builds on decades of research in focused ultrasound and has the potential to significantly expand treatment options for patients with a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders.”

Dr. Hynynen will join four other eminent scientists and clinicians on the company’s Scientific Advisory Board and is timely as Grey Matter finalizes its first minimum viable product and prepares to shortly initiate a first-in-human clinical study in treatment-resistant depression.
